The Highland Schools Choral Program serves over 100 students, grades 6-12. We are so fortunate to provide our students with the highest level of music education through curricular courses and additional extracurricular activities. Students who participate in the choir program receive extensive vocal training, perform in concerts, festivals, and competitions, and work with esteemed vocal groups and clinicians. The Highland Music Department serves over 500 students at Highland High School, Middle School, and Elementary. Vocal music courses offered include A cappella Choir, Chamber Choir, Madrigal Singers, and Mixed Choir. Instrumental music courses include 5th Grade Band, 6th Grade Band, 7-8th Grade Band, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and Marching Band. Music theory and music appreciation courses are also offered to enhance the overall music program. Extra-curricular music offerings consist of Jazz Band and Winter Drumline. Both the curricular and extra-curricular performing ensembles regularly participate in school concerts, a variety of community events, regional/state festivals, and competitions. Shannon is a Highland High School graduate who earned her Bachelors of Music in Education at Millikin University, where she performed with the Millikin University Choir, Collegiate Chorale, Millikin Women, and Tudor Voices. She has taught Middle School and High School Choir, K-5 General Music, and High School Music Theory, Music and Film, Musical Theater, and Pop Music classes. Shannon's teaching philosophy is rooted in relationship building and trauma-informed practice to better develop concepts of music literacy, tonal variety, and expressive excellence. She is excited to spend her second year teaching in the very halls where she first fell in love with music.
David Wilton is the director of Dissonance, the HHS Show Choir, and the HHS Spring Musical. He also accompanies the choir on the piano during concerts and contests.
